When it is cold outside, inside the gas spring that holds up the liftgate, our bimetal disc opens a valve that allows additional force to hold up the liftgate. If not for this feature, the liftgate would not open completely in cold temperatures – and a person could hit their head on a slightly sagging liftgate.
